Junior and Amateur Years

The first pedal strokes

Norm's journey began in California where long training rides and small-town races sparked a passion that would shape his future. His first bike, a Windsor Professional, brought from the want ads in the Sacramento Bee in 1978. His Ma said she would lock the fridge if he didn't wear a helmet. He won his first race in 1979, Pinkie's Road Race in California which felt amazing and gave him the drive to get better. In 1981, as a junior, he won the Individual Time Trial at US Nationals. A few years later in 1987 he would win that race again but this time as an Amateur. These early years built the foundation of discipline, resilience, and a love for competition that carried him into the professional peloton.
